2022 March Update

by | Mar 16, 2022

We hope that if you’re someone who takes a Spring Break, you’re enjoying one right now. It’s okay, you can catch up with us later. Go have some fun!

As you may have guessed, Spring is absolutely our season, and we are EXCITED! While the snow keeps trying to fall in the east, the flowers are rising (and spreading hayfever) in the west. Daylight is being saved in those provinces that do that kind of thing, and by now, you might be used to the alarms ringing just a bit earlier.

Spring Equinox, the turn of the season, has come, and with it, our Springaversary!

That’s right, back in 2017, two independent advice-only financial planning firms, JYC Financial and Spring Personal Finance, came together to create Spring Plans. Obviously, it was the right time of year, but it was also the right time in our lives to become a team

Over the past 5 years, we’ve grown and changed a lot. We realized that we can’t actually be all things to all people, and really worked on honing the services we provide so they fit for the clients with whom we can do our best work, and add the most value. We’ve gone from having one planner for one family, to having the breadth and depth of our entire team’s knowledge available to all the families we serve, which meant really being thoughtful about our internal communications and systems. It’s a constant work in progress, but one we think is definitely worth it.

With combined experience in financial, portfolio, cash flow, estate, and family business planning of well over 77 years (combined, not consecutive, we’re actually still pretty young!), we are confident that we’ve got the right team, with the right skills. Most importantly, we’ve got strong values to support the amazing people we’re honoured to work with at Spring Plans.

As you may remember, we took some time at the end of January to review what we do, how we do it, and what we’re doing in the future. That resulted in our even heavier commitment to focus on the work we do with you directly, helping you define the life you want to live, and creating strategies to help you make that happen. We know in order to do that, we need to be nimble so that we can help you remain successful through change.

The last few years have provided us with constant, relentless, change around the world. While that has been happening, you’ve been changing as well. You’ve been redefining what your life, well spent, looks like. With that, you’ve had to make tweaks and adjustments to the way you approach your cash flow, your portfolio, your savings, your estate plan, and your business to suit that definition. You may have found that you wanted to increase your philanthropy, support your kids through school, deepen your connections with your community… and so much more.

As you change, we’ll continue to be here to support you. There was a time when we once thought that you might be interested in receiving a plan and just never talking to us again. Over the last 10+ years working in the advice-only financial planning space, we’ve learned that’s not remotely the case. You want a team who can be there with you, a team that knows you, knows their stuff, and can help you make decisions that matter. We are committed to remaining on your team for exactly that, changing and growing right alongside you.

Happy Springaversary!

Spring Team

Practice Notes:

For those of you eager to evaluate how the markets have done this quarter, we’ll be hosting another Quarterly Market Update with Darryl Brown on April 21st, 2022. Be sure to register early and send Darryl your questions for this in-demand presentation.

The entire team will be taking an extra long weekend (4 days!!!) from April 15 through April 18. Sandi will also be taking a much-deserved break throughout the last week of April (April 25 through 29).

“Free” Fridays remain booked permanently in our calendars. These days are free to us at Spring in the sense that they are our opportunity to work on becoming better planners, whether through collaboration and discussion, education, research, or even a little down time. It’s been a regular practice since the summer of 2017, and we will continue to set aside the time to become better versions of ourselves every week. Even 1% better is solidly worth it, because we know that will be reflected in the work we do for you.

Spring in the News:

If you’re an advisor working with Family Businesses, don’t miss the “Transition of the Family Business from a Multidisciplinary Perspective” seminar May 26 with STEP Vancouver. Julia will be moderating this panel of speakers as they navigate through working together to support a family in transition.

Whether you’re a family business member or an advisor working with family businesses, you won’t want to miss the upcoming Family Enterprise Canada Symposium May 30 to June 1 in Vancouver. Julia will be moderating the opening night’s Family Enterprise of the Year Awards Celebration on May 30th at the Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle.
